Re: Repairs, Upgrades and things to look for.

That looks like the stuff. I think Walmart and most auto parts stores carry it. What was wrong with the grease?

Re: Repairs, Upgrades and things to look for.

I'm afraid converting yours over to the bronze bushings will not be easy and maybe only possible with the fabric off... There's welding involved on the fixed surfaces and I think your current hinges will have to be cut off. Aviat may be a source for the bronze bushings, but they won't be cheap! Look...

Re: Repairs, Upgrades and things to look for.

Your hinges look like the earlier welded design. I don't know if there is much you can do with them... I've attached a couple of shots of mine which are of the Pitts - Christen Eagle type. In looking for more info on strap hinge designs I found a couple of sites of interest. http://www.2wings.com/m1...

Re: Repairs, Upgrades and things to look for.

That should come apart, at least the strap should come out. I’m on the road so I don’t have pictures available of mine. I did shim the top rudder hinge. I used aluminum can stock as shims and so far so good.

Re: Repairs, Upgrades and things to look for.

Brian, I would make the bushings out of bearing bronze. It's a little harder than brass and in some cases has a porous surface to help contain the lubrication. The STP I use is the thick engine oil treatment. Back when I was a kid Andy Granatelli did a TV commercial for it :-) Leon tested several La...

Re: Repairs, Upgrades and things to look for.

Hi Brian, The strap hinges are definitely less than ideal. All the surface area and the larger diameter all add up to more friction. My plan if I went to carbon ailerons would be to eliminate the torque tube in the aileron and use self aligning ball bearings. Keeping them lubricated is noticeable in...

Re: Repairs, Upgrades and things to look for.

I've been having issue with multiple pictures inserted in my replies. The spade response took several tries to get them inserted....

Here's the missing picture of the elevator chord:

Re: Repairs, Upgrades and things to look for.

Your rudder and elevator do look larger. Here's a tape measure on mine for comparison.

My ailerons are also about 98" long, one bay longer than the original.

Re: Repairs, Upgrades and things to look for.

I'm a couple of hours north of Ft Lauderdale, Vero Beach, FL74.

I've got my Laser apart doing a condition inspection, its a couple of months past due...

Let me know when you might be able to make it up. Maybe you can make some comparisons between my Laser and yours.

Re: Repairs, Upgrades and things to look for.

The last tidbit from the Acro List forum: The bent up ends were just to give the appearance of a stock setup to the untrained eye :-) They actually diminished the spade effectiveness. Here's a rectangular spade deflection sim. This is higher aspect ratio than the Pitts spade and you can see most of ...
