I am building a 2 place (Z2300) Laser - If I were to do it again, I would 'flip' the wing bay structures and make it low wing-
Simpler control linkages & more usable room for front seat

Just like flying- it takes a lot of 'stick' (torch) time. Keep practicing!

As you can see the plans are pretty spartan & not fully developed like with some of the other homebuilts I am at the 90% / 90% stage in my build. If I were to do it again I would seriously consider low wing vs. mid-wing. It would be a reasonably easy to do mod. Just invert the fuse bays with the win...

Concerning ply covered ailerons - Adds a LOT of weight - every gram added behind pivot will have to be balanced in front of pivot. I picked up One Design ply covered aileron after it was balanced. The thing must have weighed over 10 lb. !!

On most all of these types , the fiberglass is just to protect the plywood from the environment.
It is a very lightweight 'deck cloth''.
There is little to no strength consideration.

With a sudden increase in oil loss, the shuttle valve is the primary suspect. I think you are on the right track
